Chris 'n his Milwaukee

Chris Wielk, friend to Print Brigade, regular at Prolly's Peel Sessions, and old school rollerblader extraordinaire hopped the Metro North from NYC Friday to get some riding time in New Haven. Chris brought with him one of the very few Milwaukee prototype bicycles in existence. Both Chris and his sexy bicycle are welcome in New Haven anytime!

Chris Wielk for 808

Chris Wielk nose manny. Look in the gutter...

...and you'll find Justin "One More Time" Keena!

Wielk vs. Milnes

Chris was a great time and we hope to have him up again. There'll be more photos as soon as we get the clearance to post 'em as there be some top secret parts on that whip. quick! zoom those pix!!. Also, be sure to check Justin Keena's flickr as he made both Chris and Sean do the same runs over and over and over and over again to "get the right lighting" or the "right angles" or "without that building". I feel bad for the skaters in abandoned Portland, ME warehouses he's usually shooting.

B.I.K.E. DVD's at GTV

B.I.K.E.
= a documentary following a drug addicted NYC bikester as he attempts to join the Black Label Society. It's caused a bit of stir in the urban cycling community. It's one of those things you either love or hate. Myself, I hated it the first time I watched it and loved it the second time. Well, now you get to decide for yourself, as Fountainhead has donated a sh!t-ton of copies of the B.I.K.E. DVD for Grand Theft Velo. Come out and race, and there's a good chance you're going home with a copy.

IRO x GTV3

Iro Cycle has signed on as a sponsor for this summer's Grand Theft Velo 3 alleycat in New Haven.

There is really nothing I can say about this. It's frickinawesomeness is obvious. Get the story from Jussi and follow the photoset here.

Bike Shorts

The next Bike Shorts will be taking place on April 12th... which is conveniently the day after Tracklocross for everyone who is planning on making a weekend of it in NYC. The deadline for submissions is April 5th and it will be taking place at Galapagos. Some more details about the event:

Bike Shorts is a low-key event to share whatever you've been working on with like-minded folks. It is is not a festival. We started Bike Shorts because we know there are a lot of people out there creating great stuff, and it should be easier to share and show your work.

So get out there, strap your camera to your head, and make some movies. You know what though? If all you're gonna do is strap your camera to your head and film you & your buddies dodging traffic, you're not going to win the $100 cash prize. So be original. Be creative. Impress us.

Oh, and just so you know: the winner is determined solely by the biased opinion of the audience, so bring your friends!

3RRR to sponsor GTV

Last weekend we met Nao from 3RRR at the Friday the 13th Alleycat (Freddie vs. Jason) hosted by Cambridge Bicycle. Nao's been fabricating some killer chainrings and other metal miscellany...

We're psyched to have Nao and 3RRR on board for Grand Theft Velo 3

Cream BMX Paris Alleycat:

The race was put on by Cream BMX. They've got a magazine across the pond, that'll be seeing distribution in the U.S. very soon.

Somebody should tell The Come Up that, elsewhere, BMXers and fixed riders get along.

Drop Bars Not Bombs (Round 2)

Zach over at Zlog ran another batch of his now internet-famous Drop Bars Not Bombs t-shirts, which were a collaboration with photographer Kyle Johnson.

Pick one up at the Zlog Online Shop.

Grand Theft Velo update and call for submissions

May 16th is sooner than we'd like it to be.
We've got quite a few sponsors lined up. Check the left-hand column of this blog, or throw Scorchers2009 on the ol' RSS reader. for updates.
We're working our hardest to get a li'l sumthin' sumthin' for everyone who comes out to race, but we could use help. Maybe you're that kid who just started out printing his/her own shirts, or sewing your own hats, or building your own components/framesets and you're looking to get your name out. Or, maybe you're a shop rat looking for something constructive to do with the NOS parts that are taking up space in the back room. Either way, we'd love your help. Get in touch with us if you're able to contribute.

If you're planning on coming out to ride or work a checkpoint, we're doing our best to fill lodging requests from those traveling from afar. We're getting rumblings from Baltimore, Madison, Austin, and Boston of large crews coming out, so if you're looking to win 1st out-of-town you better be bringing your game face.

Keep checking back for updates.

Genius! Skid Fail.

Thanks to Straightchain and Zlog for the heads up.
Q: When everybody's doing the same tricks and making videos, how do you go viral?
A: Wreck hard.

The parade was this weekend. Check the Re-New Haven blog for some not so flattering pictures of the Scorchers, or The New Haven Indy for some great comments from the peanut gallery.

Tyrant's Best of 2008

Tyrant has posted a best of 2008 series over on his flickr. It's worth the visit.

Dougy Fresh. Lost in India.

Doug's made it over to India in advance of the India Stage Race in Sikkim at the base of the Himalayas (what, you thought Scorchers just rode to the bar?). While he seems to be semi-homeless and roaming the streets of Bagdogra at all hour of the evening, he seems to be in good spirits.

You can follow him at his blog as well as via his twitter.

Doug also rides for Ghostship, Vicious Cycles, High Gear Cyclery, Pisgah Works, and a host of others that can be found on his blog.

More from Nike...

On top of their upcoming line of shoes targeted at fixed gear kids, Nike has dropped a preview of some other cycling apparel coming this summer. This rain jacket looks promising and word is that it is extremely lightweight and packs small so you can keep in in your bag for the random rain showers.
I'm still weary of Nike's labor practices and they definitely didn't do much to win me over with their unauthorized reappropriation of a certain anti-consumerist hardcore band's artwork, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to find some more info on this jacket. You can find more pictures of the collection over at Hypebeast

End Times?

It feels pretty bad when you find cycling caps at Urban Outfitters. But now it seems Nike has co-opted the fixed gear culture with a redesign of their Air Tiempo indoor soccer shoe aimed at fixed riding. Co-opted culture, or just another piece of gear for your cycling kit? You decide.

Photo and more info at Prolly and Trackosaurus.

Haven, not so Scorched

Just watch to the end. Jake Lineberry is my new hero. Freestyle walking is the shizzle!
I swear there were Scorchers in attendance. Nobody made the video. Esh.

Plexiglass Wallrides!

Tony Tyrant's peeps have set up a plexiglass wall for wallrides in their backyard. This satisfies every bit of my nerd-dom to new levels. Check out his blog or the "Tiny Tyrant Backyard Photoset" on Flickr.
Tony's also the guy behind the Stratford BMX Jam on the 28th.
To support these backyard terrorists, head over to the Tyrant Store and pick up his new shirt...
